JVM Architecture & OOPs Principles
Java is an object-oriented, class-based, write-once-run-anywhere language. Understanding JVM memory zones (Heap, Stack, Metaspace, Garbage Collection) is vital for high-throughput enterprise systems.
The Four Pillars of Object-Oriented Programming
Core architectural foundations of enterprise software engineering:
- Encapsulation: Bundling data with methods and guarding internal state via private access modifiers and getter/setter contracts.
- Inheritance: Reusability and hierarchical polymorphism through class extension (extends) and interface contracts (implements).
- Polymorphism: Static method overloading (compile-time) and dynamic method overriding (runtime via virtual method invocation).
- Abstraction: Exposing essential business features while concealing internal implementation mechanics via interfaces and abstract classes.
JVM Runtime Memory Layout
- Heap Space: Stores all instantiated objects and class instances. Managed by generational garbage collectors (G1GC, ZGC, Shenandoah).
- Stack Memory: Holds thread execution frames, local primitive variables, and object reference pointers. Allocated and freed on stack unwinding.
- Metaspace: Stores class metadata, bytecode definitions, and static method tables in native operating system memory (replacing PermGen).
- Garbage Collection: Generational collection dividing heap into Eden, Survivor (S0/S1), and Tenured Old Generation.
